Could not reserve enough space for object heap

Summary



Upgrading from PRPC 5.5 SP1 to Pega 7.1.7 generated the following error when starting the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) to import updates. 

Error Messages



     [java] Error occurred during initialization of VM
     [java] Could not reserve enough space for object heap
     [java] Could not create the Java virtual machine.


Steps to Reproduce



Upgrade and start the JVM. 

Root Cause



A defect or configuration issue in the operating environment:
There was insufficient memory on the machine to allocate the JVM.


Resolution



Make the following change to the operating environment:
  1. Resume upgrade on a machine with sufficient memory to allocate the JVM.
  2. Set the -Xms JVM argument to 512 m.
