Summary

We would like to know if it's possible to update Excel version to dowload reports in format .xlsx in all instances:
There is no error yet, but potentially in a couple of weeks we would reach a number of rows higher than allowed by the current excel version (which is 65K rows). This ticket is to avoid further errors in excel generation. Unfortunately we cannot provide you a screenshot as in the meantime there is not enough data in the db to force the error.

Resolution

Our goal is to be cross-browser compatible and putting the document into true xls or xlsx format would require an ActiveX control, which won't work in Safari/Firefox/Chrome.

We have two ways to send data to Excel; the one used via Export to Excel and the one used via Edit in Excel. Both use an Active X control to do this.

Export to Excel is available on all browsers, we basically send the html of the listview over to Excel. Due to the Active X dependency, xls is the only available option when the user is on the Internet Explorer browser.

There are no plans to change this functionality.
